beard-in-action With ice lying thick on the bosbaan all winter, the Holland 8 has been relegated to the rowing machine for a solid two and a half months.  For us, three times 30 minutes steady state on the erg has become almost more routine than brushing our teeth.  Last weekend, however, finally began the end of the winter training: the 20min erg test.  This is a test of pure fitness.  How many kilometers did you make on the erg, how many eggs did you eat after weight training.  This year some big players from within the group include David Kuiper and Kaj Hendriks both of whom laid down very solid performances.  ”This test is all about seeing the improvement made from the 20min test made in December” says Coach Dave McGowan, “…and we have seen some significant improvement in several of the guys.”

One week later (this past Saturday), the real test was laid out: 2km on the erg.  Man vs. Himself.  A lone, brute strength race, fought in the corners of your own mind: go harder, or go home.  This year, distinguished honors go to Roel Braas from Okeanos who pulled out the fastest time of 5.50.  After him several other rowers, including the newer rowers Harmen Eefting and Kaj, pulled significant scores of their own.
